Mailing List Charter, Asatru
V 3.1 by Lewis Stead (lstead@webcom.com), December 3, 1996
V 1.00-2.00 by John Rumpelein
Section 1.00 -- The Asatru List:
This mailing list ("Asatru") is for the communication of ideas and information between Asatru folk and interested parties. Posts on any topic connected with the practice of Asatru and the rebuilding of the Elder Troth are welcome.
To join send a mail message to listserv@home.ease.lsoft.com containing the message "SUBSCRIBE ASATRU Your Name" (Leave off the quotes.) "Your Name" is not your e-mail address (the listserv will get this automagically from the headers), but refers to the name you wish to have in the "from" section of the message.
Messages meant to be sent to the list should be sent to "asatru@home.ease.lsoft.com" (again, no quotes)
Section 2.00 -- Rules and Regulations:
- 2.01 -- Role of Moderator.
- The moderator of the mailing list will be responsible for maintaining some semblance of order so that the members of the mailing list can communicate openly and freely. The moderator will also be responsible for maintaining the overall "decorum" of the list, sometimes referred to as the "signal-to-noise ratio." In order to enforce the rules in this charter, the moderator will have the power to suspend or eject members of the list at his discretion.
- Questions on moderation should be addressed to the moderator, jspereira@pobox.com, and not to the list. Challenges to the moderator on the list or refusals to comply will not be tolerated. Open admissions of ones refusal to follow moderator requests or charter rules will result in immediate expulsion.
- 2.02 -- On who can join:
- Anyone with a valid and legal Internet address can join.
- 2.03 -- On off-topic posts:
- If a discussion thread is blatantly off-topic and/or is using an unreasonable amount of bandwidth, the participants will be asked to move it somewhere else. If it still does not stop, they may be suspended from the list.
- 2.04 -- On personal attacks and "flame wars":
- Personal attacks and "flame wars" will not be tolerated. If people feel the need to insult and humilate others in public, they will have to find another forum to satisfy that need. This does not rule out heated debates; these will certainly occur. Remember, however, that in a debate arguments are presented, which are constructed of facts and ideas. When the focus shifts to the people involved in the debate rather than the subject allegedly being debated, the moderator may step in to end the thread.
- Repeat offenders may be suspended or ejected from the list.
- 2.05 -- On crossposting:
- Messages from other (relevant) lists may be crossposted into Asatru, assuming there is no objection from the authors of the messages. With permission of their authors, messages from Asatru can be crossposted into other lists, unless there is an objection from the moderators of those lists.
- 2.06 -- On posting private correspondence:
- Private correspondence may be posted to the list with the permission of the originator of the message. Posting personal and/or confidential material to a public list without the permission or knowledge of the sender is, at best, not a very good idea.
- 2.07 -- On "baiting" or deliberately annoying another member of the list:
- Since this is an attempt to provoke a flame war, it falls under the same rules found in section 2.04.
- 2.08 -- On extended absences from list usage:
- If you expect to be away for an extended period of time, please unsubscribe from the list. This will save your sysadmin (and the moderator) from having to deal with your overflowing mailbox.
- 2.09 -- On posting on behalf of others:
- If persons wish to post to the list they should become members of the list. Limited postings on behalf of others, particularly those without internet access, will be allowed.
- Any posts made by a member of the list on behalf of another person (regardless of whether that person is a list member or not) are subject to all the conditions of this charter. If such a post violates this charter, the person making the post, as opposed to the author, will be held responsible.
- 2.10 -- On complaints of conduct:
- Complaints about conduct of members of the list should be directed to the moderator via private e-mail. Administrative issues should not be directed to the list.
- 2.11 -- On excessive posting and verbosity:
- If complaints are received about the frequency and/or length of a list member's posts, that member may be asked to curtail their posts. If the situation continues, the person may be removed from the list.
- 2.12 -- On racism and homophobia:
- Racist and/or homophobic remarks will not be tolerated on the list. This would include the advancement of bizarre theories about other races or homosexuals which imply that they are somehow inferior or criminal in nature. In general discussions of racism are considered a "Holy War" and are not welcome on the list as per 2.17.
- 2.13 -- On inter-organizational warfare:
- Any disruptive activity on the list which is determined by the moderator to be motivated by an intent to harm the reputation of an Asatru organization or any of its specific members may result in the ejection of the offending party.
- 2.14 -- On illegal activity:
- The list may not be used to facilitate any activity violating the laws of the United States. Violators may be ejected without warning. This includes copyright violations.
- 2.15 -- On duplicate addreses:
- Members should maintain only one address at which they receive the list. Multiple addresses, if found, will all be deleted.
- 2.16 -- International Prejudice
- Posts that denigrate particular countries or their residents or stereotype them with an intention to demean will not be tolerated.
- 2.17 -- Holy Wars
- Several topics have proven to be toxic and to immediately produce a flame-war environment on the list. Therefore posts on gun-control, abortion, and racism are forbidden.
- 2.18 -- Binaries
- Binary files, attachments, programs, pictures, etc. are too great a use of bandwidth and are not allowed on the list. If you have something to offer, a short post offering it to individuals is the preferred method.
- 2.19 -- Copyrights
- Copyrighted material should not be posted to the list without permission. Individual messages on the list remain the property of the owner and should not be reposted elsewhere without the author's permission. The full set of posted messages is compilation copyright (c) by Lewis Stead and the moderator retains the right to offer archival access to the list.
- 2.20 -- Excessive Abuse
- Persons who excessively abuse the list after being ejected, by resubscribing, posting messages to the list, harassing members, etc., will be reported to their system administrator.
Section 3.00 -- On the Charter:
An up-to-date copy of this charter can be viewed on the World Wide Web at http://www.webcom.com/lstead/charter.html. The charter may be modified by the moderator to respond to the changing needs of the list. Suggestions are welcome.
